Prof. Julia O’Connell Davidson lectured on “Modern Marronage” following an Introduction by Prof. Bridget Anderson

The Department of Public Health Policy, School of Public Health, University of West Attica, Athens Campus, had the honor of hosting two distinguished Sociologists and migration scholars: Professor Julia O’Connell Davidson (University of Bristol, UK) who lectured on “Modern Marronage: The Pursuit and Practice of Freedom in the Contemporary World”, following an Introduction by Professor Bridget Anderson (University of Bristol, UK) on 8th November 2022, at the Events Hall. The Dean of the School of Public Health of the University of West Attica Professor Elpida Pavi and the Head of the Department of Public Health Policy Professor Tonia Nair Vassilakou welcomed the speakers. Assistant Professor Theodoros Fouskas provided overviews of Professor O’Connell Davidson’s and Professor Anderson’s works and also moderated the event which was well-attended by staff, students, members and the President of the Hellenic Association of Political Scientists (HAPSc) Dr. Symeon Sidiropoulos, and the public. Julia O’Connell Davidson is Professor in Social Research at the University of Bristol (UK). She studied Sociology and completed her PhD in the Department of Sociology at the University of Bristol. In her theoretical and research work she examines the various aspects of exploitation and violence that are often lumped together into the term “modern slavery”, issues of human trafficking for sexual exploitation, child labor. In 2001 together with Prof. Bridget Anderson (COMPAS, University of Oxford) they conducted research (ESRC) in several countries on the “demand side of human trafficking” via the sectors of sexual exploitation and domestic work. She currently holds an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for the project entitled “Modern Marronage: The Pursuit and Practice of Freedom in the Contemporary World”. Bridget Anderson is the Director of Migration Mobilities Bristol (MMB) and Professor of Migration, Mobilities and Citizenship at the School of Sociology, Politics and International Studies of the University of Bristol (UK). She completed her DPhil in the Department of Sociology at the University of Leicester and has previous training in Philosophy and Modern Languages (University of Oxford). In her theoretical and research work she examines the relations between migration, temporalities and future making claims, with a particular focus on precarity, labour market flexibilities and citizenship rights. She has pioneered an understanding of functions of immigration in essential economic sectors and worked closely with migrants’ organisations, trades unions and legal practitioners at international level.
