Dr. Theodoros Fouskas is an Associate Professor in the field of “Sociology with an emphasis on Migration and Public Health” at the Department of Public Health Policy of the School of Public Health of the University of West Attica (Greece). His research and teaching interests combine the sociological study of migration, migrant/refugee health and access to health care, health inequalities and racial and ethnic disparities, precarious employment, and low-status/low-paid work, domestic work and caregiving, migrant community associations, solidarity and pro/anti-migrant mobilizations, social integration and exclusion of third-country nationals and migration and health policies. They further extend to the sociological study of health and illness, health promotion, quality of life and the social determinants of health.
He has taught Sociology of Migration, Sociology of Health, Health of Moving Populations – Intercultural Health, and other courses at many institutions, including: the Department of Public Health Policy of the School of Public Health of the University of West Attica, the Department of Public and Community Health of the School of Public Health of the University of West Attica, the MA Postgraduate Programme in International and European Governance and Politics of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the School of Economics and Political Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the MA Postgraduate Programme Health Promotion of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with the Department of Psychology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Department of Public and Community Health of the University of West Attica, the Department of Social and Educational Policy of the University of Peloponnese, the Department of Sociology of the University of Crete, the MA Postgraduate Programme Social Policy and Social Work Department of Social and Social Administration of the Democritus University of Thrace, the Sector of Sociology of the National School of Public Health (NSPH), the Sector of Studies in Hellenic Culture of the Hellenic Open University (HOU), the Department of Social Work of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens, at the Department of Professional Training of Police Officers – Executives of the School of Further Education and Training of the Hellenic Police (TEMES), the National Center for Public Administration and Local Government (INEP-EKDDA) et al. He studied Sociology (2004) at the Department of Sociology in Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences where he completed his doctoral thesis (2010).
He has published extensively on migration, precarious employment, migrant health and access to healthcare, social integration and exclusion. He has authored the monographs: Precarious Lives of Maids, Nannies and Caregivers in Greece: Perceptions of Migrant Filipina Live-in Domestic Workers on Labour, Community Associations and Healthcare (Prefaces by Preface by Giovanna Campani Bridget Anderson). (Nova Science Publishers, New York, 2021), Nigerian Immigrants in Greece: Low-Status Work, Community, and Decollectivization (Nova Science Publishers, 2014) and Migrant “Communities” and Labour Representation (Papazisi Publications, 2012), has co-edited the collective volume: Contemporary Immigration in Greece: A Sourcebook (with Vassileios Tsevrenis, European Public Law Organization Publications, 2014), and edited the collective volumes: Immigrants, Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Times of Crises: A. An International Handbook on Migration and Refugee Studies, Management Policies and Governance (Foreword by Giovanna Campani) (European Public Law Series, vol. CXXIV, European Public Law Organization Publications, 2021) and Immigrants, Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Times of Crises: B. An International Handbook on Migration, Asylum, Social Integration and Exclusion (Foreword by Marco Martiniello) (European Public Law Series, vol. CXXV, European Public Law Organization Publications, 2021). He has authored multiple chapters in collective volumes, articles in international and Greek scientific journals and research policy reports. He is a reviewer in international journals and a member of the editorial board in many of them. He has made many presentations at international and national conferences and workshops and has organized scientific events and Summer Schools on migration issues.
Since 2005, he has participated as a research director and researcher in many European and national research projects on migrants, refugees and other vulnerable social groups.
