Panagiota Giakkoupi was born in Athens, in 1974. She studied Biology in the Biology Department, School of Science, NATIONAL KAPODISTRIAN UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS and graduated in 1996. She was nominated Doctor of Philosophy in 2002, from the Microbiology Department, Athens School of Medicine, NATIONAL KAPODISTRIAN UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS and her thesis was “Study of functional tolerance of Extended Spectrum β-lactamases class A in mutations providing clavulanic acid resistance” She worked as a research fellow in the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, Bacteriology Laboratory, till 2000, studying ‘Bacterial Antibiotic Resistance’. Later on, she worked in the Laboratory of Infections and Antibacterial Chemotherapy in “Laiko” General Hospital in Athens till 2001, studying ‘Invasive mucus infections in Greece: epidemiological study of colonization, resistance-susceptibility of clinical isolates in drugs’. From 2001 till 2003 she worked as a research fellow in the Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, in Athens School of Medicine studying Epidemiology of hospital infections. In 2003, she was elected as
Teaching/Research Fellow, in National School of Public Health, in the General and Applied in Hygiene Microbiology and Immunobiology Department studying and teaching ‘Hospital Acquired Infections and Bacteria Antibiotic Resistance’. She had the Scientific Responsibility for Hospital Acquired Infections and Bacteria Antibiotic Resistance Laboratory in the National School of Public Health and in Central Public Health Laboratory ESDY/KEELPNO from 2009 till 2018.
In September 2018, she was selected as Assistant Professor in Public Health Microbiology-Molecular Microbiology and was put in the Department of Public Health Policy, School of Public Health, in the University of West Attica. She has participated in four European Workshops held by ECDC, the 10th β-lactamase Meeting, Eretria, Greece 31st May-4 th June 2008; ESCMID POST GRADUATE EDUCATION COURSE: Carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative Microorganisms: Detection, Epidemiology and Therapeutic Challenges/Hellenic Society for Chemotherapy and Hellenic National School of Public Health Athens, Greece 01-02 December 2011; ECDC: EuSCAPE capacity building workshop/University Medical Center Groningen/ Central Public Health Laboratory Vari, Greece, 5-6 September 2013; and lately ECDC laboratory training course: Molecular typing and whole genome sequencing for sexually transmitted infections Public Health England, London, UK, 11-13 January 2016.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    She has participated in four financed programs

She has more than 35 publications in the American Society of Microbiology, Oxford Publication and Elsevier. She participates annually in ECCMID and national Conferences with oral presentations, posters and invited lectures.
