John Kyriopoulos (1949-2022) was born in Patras. He studied medicine at the University of Athens and completed his postgraduate studies in Health Economics and Social Policy and Public Health at the University of Paris VII. His doctoral thesis was done at the University of Athens in Health Economics and Epidemiology. Since 1985 he has been Professor of Health Economics, Director of the Department of Health Economics at the National School of Public Health, and Director of the Postgraduate Programme of Health Services Management for many years. He was elected four times Dean of the National School of Public Health (1994 -1996, 1996- 1998, 2009-2011).
John Kyriopoulos was a pioneer in Health Economics and Health Policy, and he essentially developed and defined them in Greece, through his continuous, targeted and multifaceted scientific and research activity. He was a warm supporter and a source of knowledge and inspiration for many scientists – executives of Public Health, the faculty members of the ESDY and its hundreds of graduates. He served the improvement of Public Health in our country through his advisory work and his participation in numerous Committees of the Greek Governments, the European Commission and the WHO.
